There are lots of fun things to do that involve waves, but few are more fun than simply going out into big, dumping shorebreak and getting smoked. When you have no expectations of escaping unscathed, simply being thrown about in a large, sandy wave becomes the expectation. And it’s a wonderful thing, because all the pressures of “making” the wave disappear. Instead, you’re simply there because it’s fun — which is what surfing is all about in the first place. The Smith brothers know this. That’s why, after setting the record for the biggest family boogie (allegedly), they headed to Keiki, where the shorebreak is nothing if not powerful.
