The Inertia

There are different types of people that we tend to celebrate and remember in surfing. There are the great performance surfers like Kelly Slater and Carissa Moore. There are the pioneers like Phil Edwards, and Simon Anderson, the big-wave chargers like Keala Kennelly and Kai Lenny. And then there’s Duke Kahanamoku, who was all of those things, and introduced surfing to the world through his Olympic fame as a swimmer. You can’t talk about the history of surfing without mentioning Duke.

Waterman is a new documentary that tells Duke’s tale from the shores of Waikiki to his Olympic glory and popularization of the sport. And it’s narrated by the iconic Jason Momoa, a native Hawaiian himself who was also born in Honolulu, same as Duke. The film has been making the film festival circuit the past year, and is winning plenty of awards. It will be available to watch in theaters this April. Stay tuned to find out if it will be landing in a theater near you.
