As soon as news hit about a massive earthquake hitting off the shore of Russia, the rest of the world braced themselves for the resulting wave. The massive 8.7 magnitude quake off Russia’s east coast was one of the largest to ever be recorded in the country, and it triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific.
Of course, for most places, a tsunami didn’t actually come. Japan, Hawaii and Russia downgraded most of their tsunami warnings by the evening. Some tsunami waves did hit the Marquesas islands, but they were smaller than initially feared. All the way in Southern California, which had only ever been under a tsunami advisory, the effect was negligible and beaches were soon reopened.
However, tsunami or not, there’s always insanity happening in Newport. Though the tidal wave turned out to be more bark than bite in California, prolific surf filmer BEEFS TV recently posted some footage from a pumping day a few weeks earlier, to prove that they don’t need a natural disaster to kick up some waves.
“Fortunately the big earthquake did not make a huge tsunami in California or Hawaii but The Wedge still had some incredible waves like always!” wrote BEEFS in the caption “This day provided some high tuned foam ball pits. Shredders include John “Beans” Porzuczek, Tanner McDaniel, Cory Bolter, Craig Whetter, Nolan Ropoza, Tim Burnham, Alan “Parkrainjah” Hoffman and more!”
