Twenty-four hours before I found myself on a small six-seater plane over the Caribbean chasing a storm, I received a call from Karina Petroni, a professional surfer and adventurer.
“Hey, what’s up?” I asked.
“Pack as light as possible,” she told me. “We’re leaving for the Caribbean tomorrow morning.”
“What?” I asked. This seemed very sudden. “I’m not kidding,” she continued.”Are you in? When’s the absolute latest you can be back by?” I had no idea, and I told her as much. She responded quickly. “Okay,” she said. “We’ll figure it out.
It’s not often you meet people like Karina: she’s tall, tanned, blonde, and full of viking ancestry; she’s one of those people that immediately commands the attention of a room through poise and beauty. And let’s not even talk about her on a surfboard… her surfing does enough of the talking.
And then there’s Karina’s husband, Dave. He is the ultimate man. Dave can fix anything in the world (I know that’s general, but it’s true), he’s well-read, hunts with a bow, can operate any vehicle, and shreds on both surfboard and guitar.
Hanging out with them makes the idea of real-life superheroes more plausible. I had the wonderful pleasure of chasing a tropical storm all around the Windward Islands with them, and aside from the mosquitos, it was an amazing experience.
Hopefully some of these photos and video I shot do the trip justice. Expect some more amazing stuff from these two very soon.
