The Inertia

The World Surf League is calling for solid conditions to start the Margaret River Pro, May 29th. According to the Surfline forecast, the window will open with overhead waves and offshore winds in the morning to begin the waiting period when we could see the event kick off right away.

Forecasters are calling for surf at least two-feet overhead to begin things Wednesday but Friday, after smaller conditions Thursday, the swell really picks up, with waves in the double-overhead range. “Overhead surf from the WSW will build through the day on Friday, with sets pushing double overhead during the afternoon and evening hours,” reads the forecast. Officials will be watching winds closely on this second swell.

Regardless, the event window looks to be packed with contestable waves – perhaps even waves requiring competitors to ride bigger boards, which always make for good webcast viewing. After the cancellation last year due to sharks in the area, Western Australia’s Fisheries Department isn’t taking any chances and will reportedly deploy drones to spot for sharks and drop acoustic receivers in the water to detect the large fish that have already been tagged.
