The Inertia

Unbounded follows Zane Westwood on a surf foiling journey through Chile. The film, directed by Westwood’s friend and fellow foiler Dane Wilson and produced by Lift Foils, boldly and beautifully celebrates the possibilities that arise from eschewing tradition, both in and out of the water.

The film starts with Zane describing his home for the duration of filming. “I’ve come to Chile before and had an inconspicuous vehicle, but this time seems to be different,” he narrates. “This is our home for the trip: an old RV with an American flag plastered on the side.”

The RV serves as a sort of metaphor for his entire approach to the film, in which Zane’s vehicles in the water are equally unconventional. He goes on to describe “the variability and the broadness of what foiling is. It’s not just surfing. It just keeps it fresh all the time. The foil opens up so many waves that the surfboard just can’t get to”

What follows is a journey where Westwood finds himself as equally unbounded from traditional surfing as he is from regular routine. The experience is all of a piece, from attempting to get his antique RV to actually work, to connecting with Chilean locals, to making sweeping turns inches above the surface of the water. In the end, though he does land plenty of incredible waves on the way, he’s rewarded with much more.
