The Inertia

Adaptive surfers from around the world are currently congregating in Waikiki for the 2025 Hawaii Adaptive Surfing Championships. The HASC, which is part of the Association of Adaptive Surfing Professionals (AASP) World Tour, runs from May 15-19 at Queen’s Surf Break. In it, 90 adaptive surfers from around the world will compete in a variety of events.

“It’s a community, you know — we’re an ‘ohana,”  professional adaptive surfer and AASP founder Charles “Chaka” Webb told Hawaii News Now. “When it’s on in the water, it’s on. But when these guys see each other, even after six months or a year apart — it’s all love, it’s all aloha, it’s all stoke.”

The event is hosted by AccesSurf, a Hawai’ian non-profit founded in 2006 by Rich Julian and Mark Marble. The organization provides accessible beach and water programs to assist those with disabilities to enjoy the ocean.

An opening ceremony was held Thursday evening at the Duke Kahanamoku statue, kicking off the competition that runs until Sunday.
