You may have noticed something a little bit different about this year’s Gold Coast Pro. At the last minute, the venue for the perennial CT stop was changed from its usual Snapper Rocks home to Burleigh Heads.
The reason the WSL gave for the change was that Tropical Cyclone Alfred altered the seafloor enough to mess with the spot’s unique bathymetry – temporarily hampering the quality waves the region is known for. Though the dredging system that produces the Superbank promised to eventually renew the waves, it still wasn’t ready for prime time.
It appears things are progressing well, though. New footage from YouTube channel Raw Surfing shows that the Superbank is healing (though still not at full power). However, with the renewed waves come the familiar and ever-present threat of relentless drop-ins.
