The Inertia

This is the saddest thing ever. After a dolphin calf snagged itself on a drum line off the Gold Coast of Australia, her mother tried desperately to save her. She spent hours nudging her baby up to the surface so she could breathe.

While no one can say for sure how long the mother had been trying to save her baby before they were discovered, it was long enough for the calf to rub against the chain on the drum line so much that she blinded herself in one eye.

And if that isn’t sad enough, the calf, who was later named Kyra, was taken for medical attention and ended up at SeaWorld. Her mother, who spent all those hours trying to free her baby, was left with no way of knowing what became of her.

The footage above was captured by Sea Shepherd, who are focussed on “removing lethal shark control measures and installing non-lethal options currently available. According to Sea Shepherd, since 1962 when the Queensland government began using shark nets and drum lines, less than half of all the creatures caught have been sharks.
