The Inertia

I recently watched The Search For Freedom on a flight from Hawaii to Los Angeles. If you’ve taken that return flight yourself you know the pain, and if you’ve never done so then you can imagine how hard it is to leave Oahu in the middle of December. So I pulled out the iPad, threw in the headphones, and figured I’d finally see what all the fuss about this documentary was. To give you the gist of it all it’s a film that explores the parallels in lifestyle sports, of course constantly asking the awesome and simple but completely overwhelming why do you do it?

The beauty of it all is seeing athletes from several sports, surfing included, talk about whatever it is they love in ways that transcend their own arena. For Nyjah Huston it’s all about creativity. “Creativity has everything to do with skateboarding because every skater out there has their own individual style. Every skater does their own tricks. And that’s my favorite part about skateboarding – there’s so many different possibilities.” Interchange the word skate with your ride of choice: surfing, skiing, whatever you choose, and it will resonate with the same thing that gets you out of bed in the morning. This isn’t earth shattering philosophy. But if a few words of wisdom from a successful and thoughtful athlete can make your next session in the ocean, on the mountain, or at the park a little more enjoyable then it’s a perfect share.

Now get creative.
