The Inertia

Cody Townsend knows a thing or two about skiing couloirs. He’s spent a few years figuring them out for The Fifty, his ambitious project to climb and ski all 50 lines named in the book The Fifty Classic Ski Descents in North America. And as someone who learned by doing, he’s uniquely qualified to give a few tips and tricks that he’s picked up along the way. Which he did in Salomon’s How-To series.

He’s got a lot of them that will be helpful for approaching, climbing and skiing couloirs, but fair warning: don’t just watch this and head out there. The stuff you see above is for experienced backcountry travelers and does not replace instruction from a certified guide. But we didn’t need to tell you that, right?

Editor’s Note: Learn to make smart, safe decisions on your quest for untracked powder this winter with the Essential Guide to Backcountry Basics and Avalanche Awareness with splitboard aficionado Nick Russell and avalanche instructor Sam Thackeray.
