The Inertia

Great white sharks are generally portrayed as murderous creatures with a taste for human flesh. As you know by now, that’s not reality, but the reality isn’t gory enough for Hollywood. And since there are a lot more people watching movies than people studying sharks, we’ve collectively come to the conclusion that sharks are real-life monsters under the bed. But they’re not. Far from it, in fact.

A photographer named Carlos Gauna, who runs a YouTube channel called The Malibu Artist, routinely takes his drone off the coast of Southern California. He’s a self-professed shark lover, so he’s looking for sharks. This time of year, the juvenile great whites are relatively close to shore, hunting mainly for sting rays, not humans. The clips you see above were all shot in late July and August.

“Two of the great white sharks in this footage have since been photographed with torpedo sinkers and hooks in their mouths,” wrote Guana. “Additionally, the white shark seen at the 25-second mark is now missing a pectoral fin. I filmed him on (Aug. 28) without a fin (footage coming soon). Known as “Arrow” he’s gone missing since. Attempts to locate him have not been successful.”
