If there’s no better feeling on a snowboard than riding deep, deep powder, the distillation of that feeling is when the light fluffy stuff blows up from in front of you to briefly caress your mug as you let out an unbridled hoot in utter jubilation.
Now, for those so inclined to capture your face shots either to relive or to laugh at yourself, or both, there are a number of options available to you. But, Apple hopes that next time you might just pull out your phone and take a slow-motion selfie – or a “slofie.” The Cupertino-based company also seems to be banking on the idea that word soon becomes adopted as part of the modern tech vernacular, even trademarking it. Time will tell on both fronts if Apple succeeds.
Now, I recognize the appeal of carrying one device instead of two (e.g. a GoPro to take video and a phone for communication and music) but, I will say that the prospect of losing my phone in neck-deep powder is a bit terrifying. Undoubtedly, the short above was filmed with some kind of selfie stick (“slofie-stick”?) but still. The second knock – and hopefully Apple has solved this – is my phone often freezes during prolonged periods of exposure to cold.
So, will the slofie catch on? Admittedly, slow-motion face shots are a solid marketing tool. Well done, Apple.
