What started off as routine outing with her pet quickly became a heart-dropping scare for Ares Masip. The Spaniard was skiing with her dog Cim on Pic de l’Hortell, a mountain in Andorra, when she inadvertently triggered an avalanche. Luckily, she came out of the mishap unscathed and caught the whole thing on video.
As Masip recounted in an interview with the BBC, the avalanche was all the more surprising for the fact that she had taken all the requisite precautions before heading out on the slopes. “We had gone down the same route days before,” she explained. “I checked the avalanche danger bulletin and there was risk 1 in that area. I had seen people going down while we were going up.”
However, despite all that, things still took a heart-stopping turn partway through. “We started going down, and by the fourth turn, the mountain broke down at my feet and it was breaking as far as I could see,” she continued. “For me, that was the worst second of all, a moment of uncertainty. I didn’t know how serious it was. After several seconds sliding down, I saw that the scar of the avalanche was not that deep.”
Like any good pet owner, Masip immediately thought of the well-being of her furry companion. However, as you can see in the video, the dog didn’t seem to mind in the slightest. “The first thing I did was look for Cim,” she explained. “I asked him to stay put, but he’s a dog, after all, and he decided to get in. Nothing happened to him, he was running. Luckily, after around 30 seconds sliding down, we stopped. He didn’t realize what had happened. He shook off the snow and looked at me like, ‘Well, can we keep running?'”
