I have a problem with Santa. He breaks into people’s homes, has slave laborers building toys, and is a billboard for diabetes and obesity. Cynical, I know. This video is my nightmare. If I saw 250 Santas (or veritable psychopaths) skiing and snowboarding down a mountain, I would be terrified. This is Mimi Lopour’s version of a horror movie.

But that’s just me — or at least I think it is. For most of the fine folk the world over, Santa represents a positive spirit of sorts. And that is what he represented when the team over at Sunday River in Maine came together for a day on the mountain to support a worthy cause. Raising over $2,000, these Santas dressed up and descended down the mountain in the name of the Sunday River Community fund.

Events such as this are a common thread in the snow sports community. Our charities aren’t your dad’s 5K — these are as much fun to watch as they are to participate in, especially with a brew in hand. There’s no $500 plate black tie gala and no prepubescent slanging cookies or guilting you into a magazine subscription to Time Magazine. Instead we gather for annual events such as The Dirksen Derby or Rat Race. It boils down to you and your friends having a great time supporting a cause you all don’t only care about but are invested in.
