“When you go scuba diving you go to explore the environment. When you go free diving you go to explore yourself.” Those are the words of the superhuman talented Austrian free diver, Christian Redl. For almost 20 years the man has been jumping into bodies of water all over the globe, exploring what’s beneath the surface, all without more oxygen than what he manages to hold in his lungs. He’s held world records for diving as deep as 90 meters with fins and 150 meters with a scooter. But equally as impressive, the man says he can hold his breath for 7 minutes in warm water.
That’s a lot of time to spend under water. And even with that kind of time to kill it’d take some serious balls to take those talents and freestyle an exploration through a flooded mine – as he does here in an abandoned mine in Budapest. But then again when you hear Redl speak about his gift it puts things in a completely different perspective. The human body is capable of some things we can’t comprehend. And many of us fail to ever even try to toe that line. So maybe it’s best to remember what looks crazy at first glance can easily inspire others when shared with a little bit of passion.
