The Inertia

In 2016, a few local skaters in Uganda decided to build themselves a skatepark. It came after Gose Gerald got a skateboard from a Canadian NGO worker in 2005 and quickly became obsessed. He went on to found the Uganda Skateboard Society, the members of which were the ones who sweated tirelessly to build the park.

Since then, the park has become a cornerstone of Ugandan skateboarding. It’s a gathering place and a place to learn new things. Although there haven’t been too many foreign skaters visiting the park, it’s become relatively well-known around the world. It’s an example of how great skateboarding communities can be; an example of how, when people come together with a common goal in mind, big things can happen. The park is a shining example of a grassroots movement.

In this episode of Red Bull’s Skate Tales, Madars Apse and Tyler Surrey headed to Uganda to meet the crew who built the unique park and started an unlikely movement. The Uganda Skateboard Society recently started a fundraiser to buy land for a new skatepark and Uganda Skateboard Community office.
