The Inertia

Following an ATV from a bird’s eye view never looked so cool. Drones have undoubtedly changed the game in how action sports have been shared across the world. “A drone opens up a world that we’ve never seen before,” says GoPro’s founder, Nick Woodman. “Like from and angel’s perspective. That truly is the invisible camera.” And while drones of all brands typically employ GoPro’s cameras, the maker of the tiny HD devices has never jumped into the drone market themselves until now. So today they released the first sneak peak of footage shot on their own quadcopter. And as you can see, the ride is astonishingly smooth.

It could be that GoPro wants to double up on their efforts, trusting that consumers will lean toward their drones over others on the market out of familiarity. But if the claims that this footage was edited without any stabilization are true then the company could be primed for something good. Along with the release of the footage was the announcement that the quadcopter probably won’t be ready until the first half of next year, so it’s also possible the final product could be drastically improved from this prototype. Specifications, capabilities, price and other details are still up in the air, but for now enjoy your first look at GoPro’s jump into the massive drone market.
