The Inertia is seeking a new editor to join the team immediately. Individuals with all ranges of experience are welcome to apply, but the role will require identifying unique and compelling stories relevant to surfers and ocean enthusiasts daily as well as an unmatched ability to write, edit, and publish multiple stories each day. The editor will also be expected to interact with our community of talented contributors to continue to foster and develop our global contributor base.

Ideal candidates will possess the following characteristics:

• 2+ years of experience as an editor or professional writer. Candidates should have examples of recent written and published work.
• Candidates must have a strong knowledge and understanding of surf and ocean culture – past and present – and working relationships with influencers in the surf space preferred.
• Highly motivated and able to work independently as well as with teams under tight deadlines.
• Willing and excited to break news accurately and with urgency.
• Proficient in Photoshop and WordPress.
• Highly familiar and engaged with best practices across social media.
• Excellent communication skills. No typos.

The editor will also be expected help develop, execute, and manage our overarching editorial strategy on a daily, quarterly, and yearly basis to ensure we continue to innovate and accomplish our mission of becoming the new voice and media brand for outdoor millennials.

Ideal candidates will possess the following characteristics:

• 4+ years of experience as an editor and professional writer. Candidates should have examples of recent published work as clear perspectives on impact and growth at past media outlets.
• Candidates must have a strong knowledge and understanding of surf and outdoor culture as well as great working relationships with influencers, talent, and brands in the surf and outdoor space.
• Familiarity and understanding of The Inertia brand, identity, and history.
• Highly motivated and able to work independently as well as with teams under tight deadlines.

Editorial Intern

The Inertia, Surfing’s Definitive Online Community, is seeking a Content Manager Intern to share in editorial responsibilities. The position will involve formatting, editing, and posting content to the site on a daily basis as well as helping to develop and execute the editorial calendar. The Content Manager Intern will correspond regularly with contributors and is encouraged to contribute original content to the site. This is an unpaid internship, and ideally will be eligible for school credit.

Ideal candidates will possess the following characteristics:

  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with emerging technology. Proficient in WordPress, HTML, Photoshop, and MailChimp and/or other e-newsletter delivery services.
  • Eligible for school credit and currently completing coursework at a four-year College or University in English, Journalism, Communications or a related field.
  • Experience working at school paper or as a journalist preferred.
  • Excellent written and communication skills. No typos.
  • Ability to be flexible, self-motivated, and work from home.
  • Ability to write professional-level stories, ready to publish on current events and breaking news on extremely short notice
  • A strong knowledge and interest in surf culture, the Internet, and new technology.

HEALTH EDITOR

The Inertia is seeking a highly motivated and entrepreneurial editor to help build and launch The Inertia’s new Health community and develop and execute its editorial strategy. This position requires daily posting to The Inertia Health site and social channels as well as consistent communication with contributors (writers, photographers, videographers), athletes, nutrition coaches, trainers, and brands. Ideal candidates will have 2+ years of experience working in the health and action sports industries as well as experience writing for and managing a digital publication. Ideal candidates will also possess the following characteristics:

• Candidates must have strong knowledge, understanding, and work experience in health editorial as well as surf, mountain, and outdoor culture.
• Working relationships with influencers and authorities in the health, surf, and outdoor space is HIGHLY preferred.
• 2+ years of experience as an editor or professional writer. Candidates should submit examples of recent written and published work.
• Highly motivated and able to work independently as well as with teams under tight deadlines.
• Willing and excited to break news relevant to the health and outdoor space accurately and with urgency.
• Proficient in Photoshop and WordPress.

SOCIAL MEDIA EDITOR

The Inertia Social Media Editor is responsible for executing The Inertia’s voice as an authority and innovator across all social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google+, and beyond. The Social Media Editor should be able to deploy original content across all networks daily and optimize the voicing to fit each platform while also planning quarterly initiatives to innovate across all channels. The role requires excellent organizational, written, and communication skills. Success in this role hinges on driving meaningful account growth, engagement, and new authority-commanding initiatives. The Social Media editor will also contribute original content to the website on a daily basis and handle newsletter distribution.

    • 2+ years of experience in digital sales. Candidates should be well versed in online marketing and familiar with CPMs, CPCs, and comfortable structuring and maintaining digital ad buys.

    Developer
