In an attempt to warn Australian beach-goers, the exact location of sharks in the area will be reported through live tweets.

According to the Wire, scientists in Western Australia have equipped at least 320 sharks with transmitters that update a Twitter feed with the sharks come within one kilometer from shore.

The transmitters send out an alert that is converted via computer into a tweet with information about the shark’s size, breed, and approximate location.

Followers of Surf Life Saving Western Australia (SLSWA) can take the information and make their own decision about whether to enter the water or not.

The initiative comes on the heels of WA’s controversial shark cull that prompted discussions world-wide about how we’re dealing with shark attacks.
