The Inertia

Supsquatching is quite possibly the most fun thing one can do the ocean. Jamie O’Brien knows this. For those of you who aren’t privy to the coolest thing in surfing since, well, ever, Supsquatching is this: on a giant inflatable surfboard shaped like an elf’s shoe and covered in handles, between 4 and 8 people paddle out in gigantic waves and attempt to surf on them. More often than not, it works out, and you get to surf huge waves with a couple of other screaming people.

A few weeks back, a few of us from The Inertia team headed over to Makaha on a biggish day. Not huge, by any means, but probably 15 foot faces–big enough to be pretty intimidating. After a very brief explanation of how to surf big waves with five other people on one big surfboard, we paddled out into the lineup. Of course, the first thing we did was get hammered by Makaha’s shorebreak. After we sorted ourselves out, pulled up our trunks, and righted the supsquatch, we made it out into the line up. This is all part of a much larger story that will be told at a later date, but to keep it to the point, we ate shit, then caught a few massive waves and had more fun than previously thought possible.

The video above is an entry into GoPro of the World, a contest held by Surfline and GoPro. The person who captures the best GoPro clip on earth between November 1st and March 31 gets a cool 20 gs. Not bad for a day doing something awesome.
