The Inertia

Jordy Smith claimed the first gold medal awarded in surfing from ESPN’s X Games Real Surf competition this weekend. According to a panel of judges, Smith captured the best footage and was able to beat out Kelly Slater, Chippa Wilson, Dion Agius, Josh Kerr, Gabriel Medina, Matt Meola and Albee Layer.

A panel of judges picked the best 90 second video part filmed in different locations around the world. Smith filmed his part in Cape Town, Durban and Mozambique. He dedicated his win to his girlfriend Lyndall, who persuaded him to check out Mozambique, the location that landed him the gold. Not only did Smith win $50k as a result, but he also landed the title of first ever surfer to win the X Games.

Gabriel Medina won the “Fan Favorite” award, which was decided by a public vote.
