The Inertia

Are the meaty open faces of Margaret River just not heavy enough for your viewing pleasure? Do you lust for something even heftier? You might be in luck.

With a solid swell on the forecast, the World Surf League is taking advantage of one of its never-before-used mobile event sites: North Point. At least for Round 1. The WSL announced the news on its Facebook page Monday afternoon, and surfers are frothing, making posts to social media like this one from Channel Islands Surfboards.

Lying about ten miles north of Margies, North Point is a heaving righthander that is among the heaviest tubes in West Oz. Just ask former CT surfer Taj Burrow, who “copped one of the worst wipeouts of his life here when an eight-footer slapped him headfirst into the rocks below, exposing his skull and requiring major stitching,” according to Surfline.

The world’s best will be greeted with triple overhead waves when the waiting period for the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro opens on Wednesday. The ensuing several days are forecast to bring double-overhead surf, tapering to head-and-a-half by week’s end.

Here’s a reminder of North Point’s vicious beauty.

In 2015, the WSL added North Point as an optional site during the Margaret River event window, the same way it has the option to move to The Box, choose among various sandbars in France and Portugal, or to select among Snapper’s neighboring waves.
