The Inertia

Some moments in life are absolutely perfect. So perfect they’re meant to be captured on camera – on a high-definition camera shooting in slow motion – and paired with a brooding piano track that teases out the essence of the moment in a way that’s both contradictory and complementary all at once. Francisco Porcella’s butt-slide drop-in at gigantic Maverick’s is exactly that.

“It went from the most dramatic drop to the funniest moment,” Porcella told surf forecasting website Surfline.com of his drop. “I was going down the face and everyone in the channel was just hooting. Of course, I wish I stuck it on my feet, but at the same time it was kinda something different. I’ve never had that feeling of riding out of a wave on my ass.”

Shot by San Francisco resident (with a British accent!) and all-around great guy Adam Warmington, the clip above represents the crescendo of an exceptionally artful piece that contains some of the prettiest footage of giant Maverick’s we’ve ever seen. For those of you with longer attention spans, here’s a link to the full edit. It’s not all head-scratching butt-slides drops, but it should keep your stomach in your throat as you marvel at the stunning fury of Maverick’s and the crazy cats who surf it.
