The Inertia

Picture this scenario. Your 17 years young. You’re entered in the Trials for the Billabong Pipe Masters. And it. Is. MASSIVE. Unruly. Perfect by no means. What do you do?

Most 17 year olds – highschoolers, barely legal to drive – would gladly sit on the beach and watch, thinking “maybe next year.” But Griffin Colapinto isn’t like most kids his age. He braved the beasts, snagging some of the best waves of the contest, just narrowly missing a berth into the final. It was an extremely strong showing for Colapinto who, when it comes to the surf world’s wunderkids, is one of the lesser known.

In addition to charging beyond his years during the Pipe Trials, young Griff had an overall breakout season in Hawaii this winter. Above, you’ll find him charging at OTW and Pipe, then laying some rail at Rockies. And it’s all set to a flamboyant hip hop track courtesy of Andre Nickatina (what else would you expect from a 17-year-old?).
