Kepa Acero is, perhaps, the most nomadic of any traveling surfer. After years of slogging through contests–always doing well, mind you–Acero decided that enough was enough. He hit road, and hasn’t looked back. Since then, he’s traveled to nearly every corner of the globe, looking for not only waves, but anything else he can find. He looks at life in a very different way–and the view looks great.
He doesn’t use a GPS–just maps, the sun, and a compass. Normally documented by only his own GoPro and a few cameras, he travels by himself, meeting people along the way when it works out, but not worried if it doesn’t. He’s in no hurry to get anywhere, because he has no destination. His travels have taken him on wave-finding missions from Antarctica through Africa, and nearly everywhere in between and on either side.
There are few people in the world that actually live that romantic notion of getting away from it all. Kepa, though, does it–and he does it fantastically well. The video above is Kepa’s first surf in Galapagos, and as usual, Kepa’s childlike wonder at the world he’s moving through is more inspiring than his surfing… which is saying a lot.
I’ll leave off with a quote from Kepa in a Surfer Magazine profile of his trip to Gabon:
“Uncertainty is the true essence of adventure, and that’s why we feel so attracted to it.”
