Editor’s Note: This month the folks at Urban Barrels have been celebrating 30 Days of DAWN, waking up with the sun and starting every day with a good session. Here are 7 things the author has learned so far as May winds down.

1. If you want it, you gotta go!
This applies to pretty much anything that goes down from dawn onward throughout the day. For us it starts by overcoming the snooze button, brewing a cup of coffee, and getting out there for an active start to the day.

2. Embrace the element of surprise.
One of the great things about dawn patrol is you never really know how the waves will be until you show up. There’s no looking at cams. There’s something super rad about committing the night before and showing up to see what the ocean and waves are doing. Whether it’s flat or firing, we’re still out there.

3. Always avoid the meter maids.
They are on it early and will ticket you.

4. Mix it up, keep the location fresh.
Local spots are great, but it’s so good to break out of the comfort zone and see dawn at a new location.

5. Shock the bod.
That’s right, shock the body at DAWN. We’re not talking about every day, but when the waves are flat throw the boardies or a bikini on and jump in for a dip.

6. Make it fun.
Try to have as much fun as humanly possible. Grab coffees and breakfast burritos after dawn patrol.

7. Respect our playground
Try to pick up a few pieces of trash on your way to or from the session. This truly does help keep our ocean and playground clean.

Urban Barrels posts on social 5pm the night before where we will surf the next day at DAWN!! Join the party here or here.
