You’ve heard the phrase, “Life imitates art.” What about, “Art imitates the sea?” The movement of the sea is a hard thing to capture in static artistic expression, be it painting, photography, or sculpture. That’s because the sea is constantly moving, churning, being pushed by wind and pulled by the gravity of the moon.

French designer Mathieu Lehanneur, though, may have come as close as one can to imitating the enchanting hypnotic glimmer of the ocean with his black marble sculpted table. In the video above, the camera circles the table as light illuminates it from above. The effect is the illusion that the whole thing is moving. Whoa.
