Traditional ski media must be choking on its collective boga bag right about now: “How could pop-reality invade our sport?” But even the prickliest of glissader would be pressed not to admit that Gus Kenworthy’s new “Vlog” is pretty damn funny. In his first try, Kenworthy is certainly engaging, and the editor is kinda’ killing it. Kenwowrthy is also pretty candid about ripping on himself (which every sport needs), and funny with his guests (“Please don’t put me in this,” pleads Bobby Brown). There’s shades of McConkey in there somewhere.
And why wouldn’t Kenworthy start a vid blog, especially when you’re sponsored by GoPro, are one of the best freeskiers in the world and get to spend time in some of the most radical locales on Earth (duh). The problem is, these reality takes on athletic travel are tough to pull off in the long haul: think volume plus authentic humor on a consistent basis.
But freakin’ good start wit’ ‘dis one. His favorite holiday? Halloween. In Austria? So chug beer from a stein while wearing lederhosen and throw a stylie’ 7 in the park before hurling all over oneself. Genius. Love seeing things I’ve never seen before in the sport. Ever. Regardless of how weird they are. Here’s to more of the same in a tough genre.
