The ocean means different things to different people. To surfers, she delivers ridable forms of energy that can literally travel for thousands of miles. To fishermen and women, life below the surface of the ocean is what captivates, and the sea is a rich ecosystem of predators and prey to be understood and respected. And the list goes on.
Keith Malloy is one such person who has built his life around being able to regularly dive into the ocean, which explains his fascination with other people who have done the same but in different ways.
Back in April, we sat down with Keith at the San Diego premier of his latest film Fishpeople, which profiles a diverse group of individuals that live ocean-centered lives.
There are familiar subjects like Dave Rastovich and spearfisher Kimi Werner, but also a handful of less-recognizable faces, including acclaimed open-ocean swimmer Lynne Cox, and San Francisco youth worker Eddie Donnellan. Their stories about how the ocean has been such a guiding force in finding meaning in life are interwoven in a love letter of sorts.
“The ocean has so many personalities to it as well, you know,” said Keith, “so the ocean was really the star of the film, I would say.”
