The Inertia

The legend status of Honolulu-born and bred Tony Moniz goes without saying. North Shore charger. Contemporary of Buttons and Larry Bertlemann. Countless invites to the Eddie. The list goes on.

But in the Moniz family, talent runs in their blood. Kelia, Tony and his wife Tammy’s only daughter, has won two women’s longboard world championships. Isaiah, Micah, and Josh are all chargers in their own rights. And then there’s Seth who headlines the rookie class for the 2019 Championship Tour.

But unlike other families where the overbearing parent hammers the virtues of competitive success into their children, often forcing them to follow in their footsteps against their will, Tony had a relatively laissez-faire approach to his children picking up surfing.

According to Kelia, her father’s motto surrounding competition was really, “as long as you’re having fun, you are the best.”

Meet the Moniz family.
