El Capitan has gotten a lot of press this year, most of it coming thanks to Alex Honnold and his Free Solo film following on the heels of Tommy Caldwell’s Dawn Wall. But this week the Nose of El Capitan became the center of attention as 10-year-old Selah Schneiter became the youngest climber to ever complete the route.
The Glenwood, Colorado native reportedly completed the climb with her father, Mike and family friend Mark Reiger, finishing at around 6 p.m. Wednesday. Selah has been climbing for some time now as the sport is part of the family: Mike reportedly owns Glenwood Climbing Guides where he teaches climbing from sport to ice.
The route that includes 31 pitches took the group about five days to complete. “After five days on El Cap our ten year old daughter topped out, fulfilling a longtime goal that she had worked hard towards,” read the elder Schneiter’s Instagram page, as the iconic piece of rock in Yosemite Park once again played host to history.
