The Inertia

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden, British Columbia, Canada is one helluva hill. It’s arguably one of the best freeride resorts in North America, with lift-accessed backcountry that could keep one occupied for years. It’s also home to the Kicking Horse Grizzly Bear Reserve, and Boo, it’s resident grizzly that roams a 20-acre piece of land on the resort, right below the gondola. Of course the area is fenced and grizzlies hibernate during the winter. In case you were wondering, Boo was orphaned as a baby when his mother was poached. He’s lived in captivity since.

“Using harnesses, we’re able to safely open the doors and drop food throughout his enclosure,” the resort wrote on Facebook. “Boo is able to naturally forage for up to half his daily nutrient needs. However, a large bruin like Boo can cover almost 1400 square kilometers in this region, and although Boo has a large home, he’s not going to get the full caloric intake he needs on a daily basis from his habitat alone. In order to ensure Boo is getting what he needs, we boost his diet with extra calories. Spreading out the food provides Boo with more enrichment as he has to use his senses to locate the food. This form of delivery also allows us to drop in bigger food items such as the odd animal carcass, typically provided from local road kill!”
