Dave Rastovich and John John Florence are wildly different types of surfers. John John is the consummate professional, a World Tour staple, while Rasta is a free-floating free surfer, riding waves where and when his whims take him. He undoubtedly has sponsor obligations, but following a competitive tour around the world and wearing a contest jersey was never really his thing.
Despite those differences, though, John and Rasta are still both surfers. Very, very good surfers. Fluid and stylish, powerful and graceful, they embody what most people think of as “great surfing.” They’re also both relatively private people — which is why seeing them together on a trip is so interesting. John John, Rasta, and Dan Ross explored some waves in the Southern Ocean, and we’re so glad it was captured on camera.
