The Inertia

Freediving is a funny thing. A lot of it is in your head; knowing that, despite your discomfort, you’re still okay. Knowing that, despite the fact that your chest is heaving and your brain is screaming for air, you still have more time. Learning to ignore the messages your brain is sending you can be a hurdle. Longer breath holds can certainly be gained over time. But even with all the experience in the world, it’s still a dangerous pastime.

Freediving in cold water is a different ball game all together. The frigid water adds just one more thing to deal with, but professional photographer Geoff Coombs and AIDA freedive instructor Andrew Ryzebol are prepared for it. Together, they dive under a frozen lake to explore a wreck. Not the safest of endeavors, to be sure, and an endeavor that leaves the viewer feeling slightly uncomfortable.
