The Inertia

“Old surfboards are almost like a library card to go back in time,” Darshan Gooch says in Here Now: Past & Present, a new film from Santa Cruz filmmaker Kyle Buthman. The film takes a trip down memory lane with renown shaper Marc Andreini and a popular shape of his from the 1970s, what he called the “365,” comparing it to the more modern aspects of the “Vaquero,” an updated version of the 365 that Marc shapes today.

“Working on this project was fun overall but a bit challenging at times,” Kyle Buthman told us. “We actually started filming on the newer board first and we got skunked countless times. We’d drive up or down the coast in search of surf and come home dry. We ended up getting all the the footage on that board in two days and it was all right in town.

“The second board was the exact opposite, The yellow board was a good luck charm. Every time we went looking for surf with that one we were pleasantly surprised. I shot a lot of the footage on the yellow board on 16mm and 8mm film so it was a waiting game to get the film processed and see what we got, but luckily it all came out nicely.”
