When Playa Zicatela goes off, you can bet there are going to be more than a few familiar faces in the lineup. Puerto is a bit of a Mecca for big wave riders, and it’s for good reason: that wave is one of the best on the planet. And recently, Puerto surfers have enjoyed a bit of a run. First, there was that May 17 swell. It might have been a bit bigger than the most recent one, but the swell that hit that fabled beach on May 28 was epic, to say the least.
The reports were calling for 20 to 25 feet with occasional 30-foot sets in the days leading up to the 28th. When it arrived, it doled out perfect a-frames, some absolutely ridiculous tubes, and plenty of wipeouts.
