When the waves get good in Hawaii, they get really good. The problem with Hawaii, however, is when the waves get good, there are a lot of surfers who want to surf them. Depending on the time of year, lineups can get pretty choked up, and they’re choked up, for the most part, with surfers who are above average surfers. No matter how good you are, you’re going to have to deal with the crowds, and Koa Rothman knows this.
From the footage Koa recently posted, the crowd at Rockies didn’t look incredibly bad. Still, he managed to get a little tangled up with another surfer. “Dangerous crowds cause chaos on the North Shore” is how he titled the video, and while that’s probably a title to draw the viewer in, it’s still a good reminder that the waves aren’t always the thing to be worried about.
“I got tangled up with some random guy,” Koa said from the beach afterward. “Caught a wave, fell, popped up, and this guy was in a barrel — a close out — goes down right in front of me… when I popped up, we were just tangled together.”
Thankfully, nothing happened. But if you were to pop up from a wipeout with your board tangled up and saw that it was a Rothman you’d tangled with… well, it’s likely that the other surfer had a bit of a moment.
