The Black Friday swell that hit the Hawaiian Islands was a very pleasant surprise for those who enjoy surfing very big waves. The forecasts were way off in terms of just how big things would get, so when people like Mason Ho awoke on Friday morning and checked the buoys, they were likely rubbing their eyes to make sure they were seeing things right.
Koa Rothman said it was almost double the expected size, and everywhere from the outer reefs to Pipeline, Shark’s Cove, Haleiwa, and Jaws, was giant. And when things get huge on the North Shore, all eyes turn to Waimea. Among the owners of those eyes was Mason Ho, a man who has a special connection with the Bay.
Mason was accompanied by his dad, Michael, who is at the top of the pecking order in any lineup. According to the Youtube description of the video above, Mason was riding a new gun built specifically for Waimea by Matt Biolos, and from the looks of things, it worked very, very well.
