Surfing is weird. For the non-surfer, there’s a strange perception that surfing — and surfers by extension — are calm, cool, and relaxed. Surfers can talk to dolphins. Surfers are rooted with Mother Gaia or whatever. Surfers are one with the ocean. Surfers know there’s always another wave and let things roll off their shoulders. Hahaha…jkjk.
Surfers aren’t like that. Surfers are, for the most part, just normal people who have found out that sliding along a moving lump of energy in the ocean is super fun. And in Australia, there are a LOT of people who have discovered how fun sliding along a moving lump of energy in the ocean really is.
Australia, as you know, has many good waves. Because it’s Australia and has many good waves, there are many good surfers. Those surfers aren’t all Parkos and Fannings. They are newcomers, crusty old locals, rippers, and everything in between. And they’re all out there when the waves are good.
The video above, which comes from Surf Today, shows the absolute insanity that is surfing at popular waves in Australia. As they described it, it’s “kooks, wipeouts, and absolute mayhem.”
After watching the video above, “mayhem” is an appropriate use of the word.
