The Inertia

It recently came to light that Mick Fanning, the three-time world champ and businessman, invested in a Gold Coast golf and surf resort that will cost around $300 million.

According to reports, the Palm Valley Gold Coast Resort will feature a wave pool, an 18-hole golf course, a high-performance surf center, a gym, a beach club, a brewery, and over 200 apartments. That wave pool runs off of Endless Surf technology, a relative newcomer to the wave pool game. Mick, though, apparently did his research before opening his checkbook and tested the wares in an Endless Surf wave pool in Munich.

Fanning was with Dylan Graves for the session, and Graves decided now would be a good time to release an edit featuring Fanning in the Munich pool.

“I got to join Mick Fanning for an epic three-hour session in Germany, testing out cutting-edge wave pool technology,” Graves wrote. “Little did I know this same tech would later become the foundation for Palm Valley, the Gold Coast’s first surf park. Which Mick and his business partner Luke Altschwager just announced plans for yesterday.”

The episode is an interesting one, full of Mick’s “thoughts on the waves, his vision for bringing a world-class surf park to Australia, and what makes Palm Valley such a game-changer for the surf scene Down Under.”

Fanning was pretty floored by the wave — enough to drop some serious coin into the resort venture. “I was really impressed. I felt like the wave was very similar to what’s out there in nature. I love the way you can just change the wave to whatever you want… You don’t get bored. An hour out here, and I’m catching more waves than I would in the ocean, getting that fix.”
