Ours surfing

Ours is not really “ours.” It’s theirs, meaning the people willing to surf it. Photo: YouTube//Screenshot

The Inertia

Cape Solander, also known as “Ours,” is not a wave for the common surfer. It is a wave for the surfer who likes to have his heart in his throat. The surfer who likes to tempt fate. The surfer willing to take the worst beatings in reward for the faintest chance of glory. And when Ours is angry, that faint chance gets a little fainter.

The footage you see here was filmed one morning in mid-April, and Cape Solander was not in a giving mood. “Huge surf pounded Cape Solander,” wrote filmer Justin Spencer on YouTube, “and it didn’t seem too happy about it. Kudos to the surfers, that was a gnarly session.”

The area hasn’t been short on huge swells in recent weeks. Tim Bonython, a guy who seems to be at every single massive swell event anywhere in the world at any given time, created a film about it called As the Crow Flies that was just released. “Unbelievable to have such a great wave here in Sydney,” Bonython said. “So close to home!”
