Social media has brought unprecedented insight into the lives of professional surfers. Where we once had to glean details of their lives through magazine interviews and gossip, now their day-to-day is broadcast for all to see.
There are a few downsides, of course. Continual surveillance can offer diminishing returns – though their lives are unique, not every moment in a pro’s day is particularly interesting. Also, having a nasty air reverse doesn’t necessarily correlate to being a charismatic presence on camera. Still, even in the most bland travelogues, it can be interesting to see what actually goes into life on the tour.
Then there are some pros who just get it right. One of the few who actually makes it worthwhile to tag along for the ride is Jordy Smith. The South African has been on the circuit for longer than most, and yet he has only recently delved into the world of YouTube. Last time, he gave us a BTS look at the Surf City El Salvador Pro (when he won the whole event, no less). For his most recent offering, he gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Though he didn’t ring the bell himself, it’s still a snappily edited piece, with a few (semi) candid moments thrown in for good measure.
