When it comes to long days at the beach or park, a cooler is a must. Coolers are the perfect solution to keeping your drinks cold and your food from overheating. While a soft cooler or a backpack cooler are great options for days when you pack light, some days you need something capable of hauling and storing beverages for the entire crew. Cue the Igloo EcoCool Roller 60-quart cooler.
I live in Santa Cruz, California, and spend a lot of my time at the beach. When I’m not at the beach, I’m camping or hiking in the forest, so having a solid cooler is crucial for me. I spent a couple of months putting the Igloo EcoCool to the test during sunny beach days and forest hangouts.

In order to see how the Igloo EcoCool performs, I loaded it up with some ice packs, snacks, and lunch, and set out for a beach day on one of the hottest days we’ve had this year. I used reusable ice packs as opposed to ice, so I can’t specifically speak to how quickly they did or didn’t melt, but instead focused on how cold the ice packs felt and how cool the contents of the cooler stayed throughout the day.
Some days, while testing the EcoCool, I went to the beach with friends or my husband, and other days I went solo or with my pup. I’m an avid reader and sun worshiper, so my beach days tend to be long ones, and the EcoCool was the cooler for the job. I’m excited to take it on a camping trip soon.
What I Love (And Don’t Love) About the EcoCool
Eco-Friendly Construction
One of the biggest downsides of most coolers is their environmental footprint due to the plastic used to construct them. In an effort to be as eco-friendly as possible, Igloo constructed its line of EcoCool coolers from recycled materials. According to their website, they are the first hardside coolers ever made with post-consumer recycled plastic. The majority of the post-consumer plastic that Igloo is using comes from discarded plastic yogurt cups and milk jugs. Incredible.

In addition to the hardside coolers, the EcoCool line includes sustainable cooler bags, REPREVE and packable puffer cooler bags (made with post-consumer plastic bottles), and RECOO (the first 100% biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable cooler). Igloo is making big strides with its EcoCool line, and I’m proud to own an eco-friendly cooler.
Additionally, the insulation used for the EcoCool coolers is called THERMECOOL. The insulation is a unique, cleaner, eco-friendly alternative that lowers CO2 and VOC emissions, making it 50 times better for the planet.
Even though the insulation is gentle on the planet, it doesn’t sacrifice performance. The cooler is capable of retaining ice for up to five days. I’ve only had the opportunity to use it on single-day adventures so far, but every time, all of the cooler’s contents remained cold the entire day.

Seriously Spacious
First of all, the amount of space the cooler provides obviously depends on the size you choose. I tested the 60-quart size and was blown away but how much I can fit in the cooler. This size can hold up to 93 cans — can you say party!? Keep in mind that’s without ice. The shape of the cooler stands tall, so you can easily fit wine bottles, 2-liter bottles, or any larger upright items you may desire.

Portability Features
This is a good-sized cooler, and accordingly, it’s heavy. Luckily, the Igloo EcoCool Roller has large, all-terrain wheels that help you haul it almost anywhere. On the road and hard-packed dirt, the wheels performed like a champ. When I hit the sand, I didn’t think they’d work, but they did a surprisingly good job. It’s obviously much more challenging to wheel the cooler through thick sand, but it is doable.

The EcoCool also has a locking, telescoping handle to roll the cooler. It stows fairly flush when you don’t need it. Because the handle locks out, you can push or pull the cooler. Although the handle proved to be reliably proficient during my testing, it doesn’t seem the most durable, so I could see it potentially having issues down the line if you’re not gentle with it. It doesn’t feel as durable as the Yeti Roadie’s handle, for example (but that cooler is four times the price).
Finally, the EcoCool has two side handles that you can hold onto when loading the cooler into your vehicle, or if you choose not to wheel it. I wish the cooler had a center handle as well, but I realize that might not be a realistic option without a locking lid.

Extra Features
I love the four cup holders on top of the cooler, especially at the beach. It’s not a feature I would have sought out, but I actually love it. When I wasn’t at the beach, I had the EcoCool out in my apartment and even found myself using the cup holders then! The cup holders are also self-draining, so if you spill, you don’t need to worry about it pooling up in a sticky mess. In addition to the self-draining cup holders, the EcoCool has a leak-resistant drain plug in the bottom so you can easily drain ice melt.
Price
Okay, the reality of the Igloo EcoCool Roller is that it’s not a top-spec roto-molded design like the Yetis or Pelicans of the world. But our team at The Inertia is of the (maybe unpopular) opinion that most of the time, most people don’t need that much insulation (and subsequent weight). Instead, a classic blown-in molded cooler does the trick, and at about $100, the Igloo EcoCool Roller 60-quart is a serious steal. It has plenty of good ice retention for an all-day trip to the beach, and should perform great on weekend camping trips. And it’s just a fraction of the price of a similar-featured roto-molded cooler.

Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for an affordable cooler for beach days, camping trips, or parties at the park, you’ll love the Igloo EcoCool Roller. Made from post-consumer recycled plastic, the EcoCool is gentle on the environment but reliably durable and insulated. To compensate for its size and carrying capacity, the EcoCool has all-terrain wheels and multiple handles to make transportation a breeze.
