The Inertia

Summer is pretty much here in the Northern Hemisphere. Depending on where you live, that means a few things: better weather, yes, but it can also mean a severe lack of waves. And for those on Oahu’s North Shore, summer can feel pretty long. Which is why, I assume, Jon Pyzel decided he’d break down four of his favorite surfboards to beat the summer doldrums.

“From small-wave grovelers to versatile all-rounders, Jon walks you through the shapes, design features, and what conditions each board is made for,” the Pyzel team wrote. “Whether you’re chasing playful beachbreaks or punchy reef setups, this is your inside look at what Jon recommends riding — and why these boards work when the waves get a little less pumping and a little more playful.”

Pyzel is a little better known for making surfboards that can handle the North Shore’s famous juice. Surfboards that can stand up to the power of some of the best waves in the world; surfboards that someone like John John Florence likes to ride.

But those aren’t the everyday waves most of us surf, so finding something that’ll work when you’re groveling is pretty important. If you’re not a person who enjoys the swing and glide of a longboard but still likes to ride waves as much as possible, this quick hit from one of surfing’s most knowledgable shapers is a good watch.
