Austin Gibbons drowned after reportedly suffering a seizure while surfing in New York on July 11. He was 26 years old.
The incident took place in the water at Skudin Surf in Long Beach, New York, a surf school where Gibbons started as a student and went on to become an instructor.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of Austin Gibbons, a cherished member of the Skudin Surf family for over 15 years,” Skudin Surf wrote on its Instagram page. “Austin began his journey with us as a young camper and grew into an exceptional instructor and mentor. A certified lifeguard and talented surfer, Austin was equally known for his warmth, compassion, and the deep care he showed for every camper he taught.”
“Austin’s presence created an unforgettable mark on our camp and will be profoundly missed,” the tribute continues. “Out of respect for the mourning of the family, friends, and community, we ask only for your prayers at this time.”
Gibbons nearly lost his life in 2024 after a two-wave hold down at Pipeline left him unconscious. Rescuers revived him on the beach, and he was placed in a medically induced coma for five days before making a recovery. A crowdfunding campaign raised over $123,000 to help cover his medical expenses. It’s unclear whether last week’s incident is related to the 2024 accident.
Friends remembered Gibbons with posts on social media not only as a surfer, but also for being a standout lacrosse player at Long Beach High School and Nassau Community College.
“Austin loved the ocean and loved teaching the local kids to surf,” said local photographer Bob Arkow. “He was kind, caring and had empathy for others. The kids adored him.”
The tragedy in New York occurred just three days after a French lifeguard also drowned while surfing in Biarritz, France.
