Matahi Drollet is about as dialed in at Teahupo’o as a surfer can be. When it’s big, he’s always one of the ones to watch, consistently paddling into some of the best waves of the day and riding them flawlessly. And on July 28, he went above and beyond.
“I believe this is the best ever paddled at Teahupo’o,” Billy Kemper wrote in an Instagram story.
Drollet wasn’t the only one who scored that day. Tereva David, Eimeo Czermak, Mateia Hiquily, Gilbert Teave, Peio Ostolozaga, and Manake’i Kahiha were all in the lineup too, and that’s a difficult crowd to stand out in. But Drollet did it just fine. The wave in question begins at the 3:45 mark in this video, but the rest is full of waves nearly as good.
“It was a very special day at the end of the road,” Kyron Rathbone wrote on YouTube. “Matahi Drollet on quite possibly one of the most heavy and technical waves ever ridden anywhere ever.”
