Tough to beat both the quality and the crowds at Kirra when it’s on. Photo: Surf on Mars//YouTube
Kirra Point is one of the best waves in the world. When it’s firing, the wave’s quality is tough to beat, but because it happens to be on the Gold Coast, it’s also tough to be the crowds. The video you see here is from May, 2021, but it’s recently been released on YouTube thanks to Surf on Mars.
Kirra is just a part of the Superbank. On very special days, when everything aligns, it’s possible to ride from Snapper Rocks past Little Marly Point and into the deeper waters of Rainbow Bay. Greenmount Point. That’s where things can taper off a bit, but if you can make it to Greenmount Point, you’re looking down the line all the way to Kirra Big Groyne.
Even if they’re not connecting, you can catch a wave at Snapper and simply keep catching another one down the line from where the previous one died out. Eventually, you’ll be on the sand of Collangatta Beach, where you can have a leisurely (not leisurely if it’s firing) stroll back up to Snapper.
Here, Parko, Sierra Kerr, Sheldon Simkus, Nick Vasicek, Josh Atkins, and more spend some time at Kirra during one of the best days in recent memory.
