In middle of summer, a film called Less Than Easy hit the internet. Starring Albee Layer, it is a visual masterpiece that focusses on Maui and the surfing that happens there. And just last week, a few of the b-sides along with some interesting commentary were released.
“Not gonna lie, was pretty hyped to patch together this segment from the cutting room floor. Crazy to be this productive and talented and remain SOOOO humble,” Layer joked on Instagram. “But really, thanks for watching and all the love on the original short film.”
What you see here is a look behind the scenes of Albee’s part of the production. It’s a good look at how the man thinks and why he surfs the way he does — with a disregard for his limits, but in the most controlled way he can manage.
“I think when you push yourself in either airs or big wave surfing or whatever it is,” he says at the beginning of the short film, “you show parts of human potential that are important. That’s my motivation.”
