Though it’s been an uncharacteristically mild hurricane season, that doesn’t mean it’s over. As the Associated Press reports, Tropical Storm Gabrielle has formed in the Atlantic. Though the storm is currently spinning far out to sea, experts say it could strengthen in the coming week.
Tropical Storm Gabrielle first formed Wednesday in the Atlantic Ocean, making it the seventh named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. The AP reports that the center of the storm re-formed from its morning position and was located about 990 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands. According to a National Hurricane Center public advisory, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and was moving to the northwest at 15 mph.
There are currently no watches or warnings from the NHC, as the storm is still expected to remain over the ocean for the next few days. However, the organization did say that Gabrielle could intensify over the weekend.
This brings to an end a nearly month-long lull in an already quiet hurricane season. Erin has been the only named hurricane so far, which created all-time swell for American surfers and even made some extra-large waves over in Europe. Still, the season is not over yet, and will officially continue through November 30.
